More About Holistic Coaching
What is Holistic Coaching?
Holistic Coaching is about empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives on an emotional, mental, physical and spiritual level in order to achieve greater well-being and success. The challenges of the world today are an outward manifestation of our own internal realities. If we want to change the world around us, we have to change our internal representations and inner truths first. And this means changing our lives for the better and creating the experiences we truly deserve to live with purpose, abundance and joy. Coaching helps people to design, live & lead their lives more consciously and proactively. A coach is a partner who is committed to help people develop & implement their goals and discover new possibilities and choices. In this process however, we sometimes come across interferences and inner obstacles that hold us in limitation, even though we “rationally” know that this shouldn’t be so. This is where “healing” can help to overcome blocks and free up inner resources to move forward. In Holistic Coaching I aim to take the whole person into consideration, accessing the body-mind-spirit connection as he/she is progressing towards his/her goals. How is this different from traditional Coaching or Therapy work?
Holistic Coaching does not replace Therapy nor is it in conflict with traditional Coaching approaches. The main process is based on traditional Coaching, yet due to personal experiences and development, I have taken the liberty to integrate different tools & techniques that can help to deepen the coaching process at different stages of the coaching engagement, if necessary. Personally, I found that traditional coaching can fall short on overcoming unconscious blocks to success. Yet, focusing on healing in a therapeutic sense alone falls short of providing goals, (mental) strategies and actions for the person to move forward. Holistic Coaching clients are normal people with normal challenges and unfulfilled dreams. Clients in therapy however, may seek help for mental illnesses, complex childhood imprints or addictions. If I would identify those within a Holistic Coaching engagement, I would refer clients to reputable therapists. Currently, the approaches, tools & techniques I draw from in Flow & Balance include:
As a note, we all know that even the best coach is human. Being a Holistic Coach does not mean everything is accomplished. My personal aim is to walk the talk and be a role model for clients by staying on the journey to wholeness and translate my purpose into actions. NLP is a technology for human change derived from the science of modeling achievement. It is both an art and a science of personal excellence grounded in practical models, skills and techniques for thinking and acting effectively in the world. At its core NLP is about enriching our maps of the world, increasing choices and enhancing the quality of life. Incorporating NLP into the coaching process is very powerful since it deals directly with how goals, beliefs and values interact – the essence of the coaching process. It is also a speedy way to alter the way we go about doing things if they do not work – with NLP we can identify how do we do what we do and how can we do it better. With NLP in Coaching, we can work on the body-mind connection, state management as well as alter behaviours.
Neurology – The mind and how we perceive, sense and think. NLP began in the 1970s in the US with the work of John Grinder, a professor of linguistics and Richard Bandler, a psychologist. It is a dynamic discipline and still evolving. Time Line™ is a NLP approach that was originally developed by Tad James (www.tadjames.com). It uses temporal perspectives (Past, Present, Future) to gain emotional freedom and release subconscious resources for personal mastery Behavioural change happens on a subconscious and not conscious level and by using TLT techniques, effects of negative experiences in the past can be released and “inappropriate” programming can be changed – fast & effectively. It works with the following process:
Hypnosis is a state of mind in which suggestions are more readily accepted and acted upon than in any other day-to-day states. It can be compared with a state of deep relaxation, meditation or trance and is a naturally occurring state. In Flow & Balance, we do not offer Hypnosis as a standalone service, but integrate it into the overall coaching process to access the power of the subconscious mind to build and expand positive resources for the coachee. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
EFT is an Energy Healing technique from the new field of Energy Psychology to release negative emotions. It is based on the fact that negative emotions or fear-based reactions not only happen in the mind, but are held or manifested in the body as a disruption of the body’s energy flow. By stimulating certain meridian points and tuning in on negative thoughts, beliefs, emotions and programs, we can rectify the energy flow and relieve the symptoms. How long should I be coached?
Coaching is not a quick fix and like any other change process, it happens over time. For Leadership Coaching I therefore recommend a program of 6 months with 8 sessions, 1.5 hours each. Life Coaching can be conducted over a period of 3 months with 6 Coaching sessions, 2 hours each. After the initial 3 or 6 months, clients can go on a month-to-month basis.
